| 545 | 0 | |a John McLoughlin, the father of Oregon, first came to the Northwest in 1824 with the Hudson's Bay Company. He served from 1825 to 1846 as chief factor for the Hudson's Bay Company's Columbia District based at Fort Vancouver where he played a key role in the development of the Oregon Country. In the late 1840s his general store in Oregon City was famous as the last stop on the Oregon Trail. A native of Canada, McLoughlin became an American Citizen after Oregon became a U.S. Territory. He served as mayor of Oregon City in 1851and died in 1857. The Oregon Legislature officially named him the Father of Oregon on the centennial of his death in 1957. | |
