This nonfiction children's book provides an account of the experiences of British war veteran James Howard Williams, who came to be known as "Elephant Bill," and his close relationship with an Asian elephant named Bandoola. Williams met Bandoola when he began working for the Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation, helping to harvest teak with the aid of elephants. During his time there, Williams became aware of the animals' intelligence and became sensitive to their care. When war broke out in Burma, he oversaw the evacuation of the elephants and refugees, saving their lives.
