545 0 |a Though greeting cards have been around since the early 1400s in Europe, they became extremely popular in the mid-nineteenth century. Due to changes in printing, and the relative low cost of postage, they became much more popular around 1850. In the United States, the first printer of greeting cards was Louis Prang, who started printing near Boston in 1856. Other companies followed suit in the following decades. The custom of sending Christmas cards began in the 1870s. In the early 1890s, they reached their peak of popularity, though there was a decline in the 1890s.
