| 545 | 0 | |a Harvey L. Clark, missionary and educator, was born in Vermont in 1807. In 1840, he and his wife moved Emeline, moved to Oregon as missionaries. They were independent missionaries, unaffiliated with the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. In Oregon, he first taught at the Methodist Mission's first location in the Willamette Valley. In 1841, he moved to West Tuality on the Tualatin Plains and taught at the mission there. This location later became the town of Forest Grove and he claimed land there. He participated in the Campoeg Meetings and at the 1843 meeting, he voted for the creation of the Provisional Government of Oregon. In 1844, he established a Congregational Church in Forest Grove and another in Oregon City. In 1842, he started a school for Natives Americans and later started the Tualatin Academy, which would later become Pacific University. He died in 1858. | |
