In Oregon, late 2002, Bangladeshi American girl Nisrin becomes the victim of a hate crime for her headscarf for a class project on her cultural heritage. Traumatized, Nisrin retreats into isolated depression for the summer. In the new school year, though, Nisrin decides to wear her hijab to school every day in a bid to understand her family and their relationship with Islam better, and also figure out who she truly is herself.
