520 |a In 1832, Alexander Maximilian, a German prince, naturalist, and explorer, traveled to America to pursue his interest in the Plains Indians. With a servant and a young Swiss artist named Karl Bodmer, he spent several months at Fort Clark, an American Fur Company post (in present-day North Dakota), located near the Mandan village, Mih-Tutta-Hang-Kush. Though Maximilian and Bodmer never lived with the Mandan, they were invited to observe tribal life and acquired information from Mandans who visited the fort to share stories and have their portraits painted. In words and pictures, the artist and the prince recorded their observations of the Mandan and the Hidatsa, a neighboring tribe. Their account, which was published in several languages, provides a glimpse of traditional Mandan life before a smallpox epidemic killed most of the tribe. Drawing on translations of Maximilian's work and incorporating Bodmer's detailed sketches and watercolor paintings, Freedman makes the unique record available to young readers, doing an excellent job of preserving a sense of the original material. As he notes in his introduction, the visually appealing and beautifully written work is a view of "Native American life and culture through the eyes of European strangers." Today, the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara, known as the Three Affiliated Tribes, share the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota. A list of places to visit, a list of illustrations, and a bibliography are appended.
