545 0 |a The Monroe Street bridge described in this report is actually the third Monroe Street Bridge, built in 1911. At the time of its construction, it was the largest concrete-arch bridge in the United States. The first Monroe Street Bridge was a wooden bridge, built in 1889 and burned down in 1890. It was replaced with a steel bridge, which was declared unsafe in 1905 but continued to be used until the 1911 concrete bridge replaced it. The Monroe Street Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and on the Spokane Register in 1990. In January 2003, the bridge was closed for restoration and the old bridge was dismantled. The newly reconstructed bridge was put in its place, and opened in September 2005.
