In the town of Windydown Vale, fourteen-year-old Copper Inskeep is the latest in his family to uphold their secret tradition of posing as the legendary ghoul that haunts the town's outskirts. His family's pledge has been to keep travelers safe from the swamps and nefarious bandits while gently nudging newcomers to their inn. The scheme has worked well for generations, until a girl claims the ghoul has taken her father and Copper knows it wasn't him. Shortly thereafter, a man arrives pledging to rid the town of the ghoul, and Copper delves into an investigation into who the new arrivals are while trying to keep his identity as the ghoul a secret.
