A colony in the North American west started in South Dakota, but branched off into Canada. In the 1950s, Paul S. Gross, a minister and Hutterite leader decided to move his colony to Washington. They originally settled in Lincoln County in 1956 and established the Deep Creek colony, about 20 miles West of Spokane in 1960. Gross died in 1998.
