545 0 |a Ashahel Munger and his wife, Eliza, were independent missionaries who traveled to the Oregon Country in 1839. They hoped to settle with a local tribe and become self-sufficient. After arriving in the area, they realized that establishing an independent mission would be much harder than they had envisioned. Mr. Munger decided to work for Dr. Whitman as a carpenter. The Mungers stayed at Waiilatpu until the spring of 1841, when Munger became mentally ill. He worked for a short time as a Missionary in Salem, but eventually committed suicide.
