545 0 |a Picture postcards were invented in 1869 in Austria but were not widely adopted by the rest of the world until the 1880s. The first postcard design in the United States was adopted in 1873. Postcards became a popular means of communication as the postage for one cost half the amount of a two-cent letter. In addition to being simple and inexpensive, postcards were also seen, as they are now, as an ideal keepsake souvenir of places visited. They became a major collector's item between 1904 and 1912, an era often referred to as the "Golden Age" of the postcard. Most of the postcards sold in the United states during this time were printed in Germany, which was the leader in the lithographic processes that produced high quality pictures. However, World War I brought an end to Germany's postcard production, and other factors, such as the influenza epidemic, inferior quality cards, and easier communication caused people's interest in postcard collecting to fade. Nevertheless, the market for real photo postcards continued, and as manufacturers were able to print thousands of a particular image, postcard racks began appearing at every tourist attraction.
