Club Bulletins

Kit -

Primarily bulletins of the Spokane Mountaineers. The first monthly bulletins present are from 1926 and the run is incomplete for some years. In the November/December 1933 issue, the mountaineers changed the name of the bulletin to the Kinnickinnick of the Spokane Mountaineers. The bulletins give information on upcoming events, officers, new members, and other activities. In addition to the bulletins, the collection contains the by-laws from 1937 and 1982, and some membership lists.

545 0 |a The Spokane Mountaineers was founded in 1915 by Ora L. Maxwell and other staff members of Spokane Public Library. It was originally the Spokane Walking Club and was an all-women club, but added men in 1916. The name was changed to the Spokane Mountaineers Club by 1921 and was incorporated in 1935 "with the tradition of developing an outdoor fellowship and responsibility for preserving wilderness values of the Inland Northwest." Climbing became an official committee of the club in 1935. As a member of the Mt. Spokane Ski Association, the club was part of the effort to add a public ski course to Mt. Spokane State Park in 1937. Some members did not support the Mt. Spokane efforts and broke away and started the Spokane Hobnailers hiking club in 1951. The club has emphasized conservation and community service throughout its history.
