Spokane Mountaineering Photo Albums

Six photo albums of hiking trips around Washington and Idaho, primarily taken in the 1920s. The albums are well-identified with topographic maps showing the areas where the trips occurred, and then individual photographs are also labeled. Photographs includes mountains, rivers, lakes and other natural areas, as well as pictures of people (sometimes identified), and groups on hiking trips. Some old mining and lumber camps are also included.

| 545 | 0 | |a Charles D. (Dickens) Magee (1885-1953), commercial artist and photographer, was born in Portland, Oregon, but came to Spokane in 1890. He graduated from Gonzaga and worked for Spokane American Engraving company. In 1943, he began working as a freelance artist and geological consultant in Spokane. He was an avid photographer and an enthusiastic hiker. He belonged to three hiking clubs through the years -- the Spokane Mountaineers, the Trail Club and the Hobnailers Hiking Club. All through his life, he took long hiking trips with the groups and by himself. On these trips, he took pictures for himself as well as for the hiking clubs. He was also an amateur geologist and made a set of maps, which was given to Washington State University. He was an active member of the Spokane Camera Club, the Hobnailers and the Columbia Geological Society at the time of his death of a heart attack in 1953. | |
