In 1971, mixed-race girls Josie, Francesca, and Jamila feel like outsiders in their predominantly white neighborhood in New York City--but at least they have each other. Now in seventh grade, the girls must get on a bus and ride to a new school in a black neighborhood to help it integrate. Things begin to fall apart when Francesca's parents take her to a private school and Jamila and Josie are put into separate classes. Now in a divided world, the girls must try to find their place again.
