The power of the dog

a novel
by Thomas Savage ; afterword by Annie Proulx
Book - 2021

"Set in the wide-open spaces of the American West, The power of the dog is a stunning story of domestic tyranny, brutal masculinity, and thrilling defiance from one of the most powerful and distinctive voices in American literature. The novel tells the story of two brothers--one magnetic but cruel, the other gentle and quiet--and of the woman and boy, a mother and son, whose arrival on the brothers' ranch shatters an already tenuous peace. From the novel's startling first paragraph to its very last word, Thomas Savage's voice--and the intense passion of his characters--holds readers in thrall."--Back cover

520 |a 1925. The Burbank brothers, Phil and George, are wealthy ranchers in Montana. Phil Burbank can castrate a bull calf with two swift slashes of his knife; he swims naked in the river, smearing his body with mud. At the Red Mill restaurant on their way to market Phil behaves cruelly, driving Rose, the widowed proprietress, to tears. George comforts Rose, and later returns to marry her. As Phil swings between fury and cunning, he taunts Rose, and is more overtly cruel to her son Peter. When Phil appears to take the boy under his wing, is the gesture a softening that leaves Phil exposed, or a plot twisting further into menace? -- adapted from Netflix info
