545 0 |a Founded in 1841 by the Belgian Jesuit Pierre Jean De Smet, the Rocky Mountain Mission covered Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Jesuits came from all over but the majority came from Italy. By 1895, the Mission's personnel reached 160 and came from all over Europe. Because they were not Americans, they were not identified with United States policy towards the Indian tribes to whom they were missionaries, and were very successful. They were also able to help mediate between the government and the tribes. In 1880, the Indian Bureau put pressure on the missions to teach English, which was a problem for European priests. In addition, the Jesuit decision to open colleges with the founding of Gonzaga in 1887, the missions began serving the white population as well as the Indians. These changed priorities caused a dwindling in the number of missionaries and in 1907, the Jesuits combined the Rocky Mountain and the California Missions.
