The "Left-Handed Fate" is the ship that belonged to Lucy Bluecrowne's late father, a British privateer, and now belongs to her. But while she and her friend Maxwell are searching for an ancient artifact that is said to have the power to end the war that is raging around them, the "Fate" is taken over by Americans. Captives on their own ship that is being captained by twelve-year-old Oliver Dexter, they are pursued by the French and another mysterious ship and crew with otherworldly powers. Betraying his orders, Oliver helps Lucy and Max, and the three try to outwit their pursuers in order to obtain the powerful device first.
