One handwritten manuscript (18 pages), entitled "Reminiscences of S. J. Crutcher." His account describes the trip from Nevada to Washington in 1880. He describes his days (including "Indian uprisings") in Nevada as well as people and places encountered on the journey. He also tells of many fears and incidents with Indians on the journey. He describes his first view of Walla Walla and the "promised land" -- the Territory of Washington. He and his family located on a homestead in the spring of 1881 and planted fruit trees.

545 0 |a Samuel J. Crutcher, politician, was born in Kentucky in 1830. After moving with his family to Missouri, he studied Medicine and joined the Missouri Home guards and then the United States Volunteers during the civil war. In 1864, he moved to Nevada where he built a hotel and boarding house and then became a farmer. He engaged in a number of occupations in Nevada, including serving on the legislature and raising cattle. He moved to Whitman County, Washington, in 1880, where he began farming and ranching. In 1885, he was elected to the state legislatature from Whitman County. He died in 1908.
