America's landlocked Navy

Farragut's WWII memories
a production of KSPS Public Television ; written narrated and produced by Alison Kartevold
videorecording (DVD) - 1999

As America entered World War II, hundreds of thousands of young men and women heeded the call to arms and enlisted. For those who entered the Navy, many were surprised to find themselves being sent inland to the forests of northern Idaho. Farragut Naval Training Station was temporary home to more than 300,000 recruits. During its period of peak operation, Farragut consisted of 776 buildings in all. Today, all that remains are cracked cement foundations, the brig, and two giant water towers. Through archival photos and remembances of those who were there, the base's glory days come alive again.
