Document of John E. Smith, of Reardan, Washington about the location of Camp Washington. It talks about the location of the historical marker. In 1908, the Washington State Historical Society erected a historical marker, but many historians believed it was in the wrong place, including Jacob A. Meyers. The marker was changed in 1928. The collection also includes photographs of the sites, some of which were taken by Meyers.

545 0 |a John E. Smith was born in Newark, New Jersey and left home at the age of fourteen as a cabin-boy when he sailed to San Francisco for the Gold Rush. In 1854, he joined the Second Oregon militia and served in the Rogue River Indian War. He engaged in a number of Indian battles in the region and he settled in Reardan.
